September 9, 11:00am – 3:00pm: Maine Digital Festival at Midcoast Mini Maker Faire. Attendees of this hands-on workshop will explore computer science and coding careers. They will be able to practice coding skills using Code.org’s curriculum. Learn how to use App Lab and test out Circuit Playground boards. An explanation of the types of in-demand technology jobs in Maine as well as information about Project>Login will also be presented.
Suggested donation of $2/individual, $5 per family.

September 15-17: Family Weekend on Hurricane Island. The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership is excited to be hosting its second Family Weekend in fall 2017! The summer weekend was such a big hit we decided to offer another opportunity for families to join us on the island. This weekend is for families to unplug and experience our off-shore and off-the-grid island together as they explore, learn, and connect with each other and other families. Science programming options will be offered each day and families will also have time to play along the shore line, hike our trails, and even jump off our pier to take a quick swim in the ocean. Come join our island community and make memories that will last a lifetime.

September 14, 7:00-8:00pm: The Facts on Fish Farming: The End of an Environmental Disaster. A talk by Jen Levin, GMRI Sustainable Seafood Program Manager. Jen has devoted her career to sustainable use of renewable resources. She’s an expert on our local seafood industry, and has experience working with all parts of the supply chain — from fishermen to processors to retailers. Seating is limited; registration suggested.
September 28, 6:30-8:00pm: Preparing for Sea Level Rise. Our sea level rise program brings local relevancy to global scientific data through history, maps, and case studies. Join us for a 90 minute interactive experience to explore the impacts of sea level rise and weather events on community resources, and examine potential resiliency measures. Seating is limited; registration suggested.

Fridays, 7pm: The To-Night Show In this all-live late night talk show styled planetarium program, your host will bring you the latest and greatest in astronomy news including NASA missions, new discoveries, and plenty of (bad) jokes. Starring 4-time Emmy watching host Scott Mitchell, the legally and creatively distinct To-night Show offers fun and entertainment, while definitely not infringing on the copyright of NBC. Sundays, 2pm: In My Backyard. With song and colorful animation, it is an adventure to explore a backyard like this one with children’s songwriter, Fred Penner, of Nickelodeon fame. His excitement and love of nature takes visitors on a tour of daytime discovery and then the wonders of the night sky. The changing seasons, rainbows, constellation patterns, planets and moon phases set to music are just a few of the treats in store. From day to night to sunrise, looking at the world and space around us, In My Backyard is a journey that shows how much fun learning about our world can be.

September 20, 7:00pm: In partnership with Maine Media Workshops and College, Schoodic Institute invites the public to a free lecture by two experienced night sky photographers. Join Maine Media Workshops and College instructors, Nate Levesque and Jim Nickelson, as they share their professional work and expertise in night sky photography. Moore Auditorium, Schoodic Institute campus.
September 21, 12pm: Massachusetts Audubon Coastal Waterbird Program. The public is invited to join 2016 Field Technician Nicole Gallup, now with the Massachusetts Audubon Coastal Waterbird Program, as she shares history, purpose and current work of the organization – monitoring Piping Plovers. Gallup will also cover other Massachusetts Audubon projects such as horseshoe crab, and turtle population monitoring. Moore Auditorium, Schoodic Institute campus.
September 21 – 24: Acadia Night Sky Festival encourages families as well as serious amateur astronomers to explore the night sky of Acadia National Park and Downeast Maine. Acadia National Park has some of last pristine, star-filled skies in the eastern US.

September 21, 7:00-9:00pm: Science of Cocktails – MSF Pop-up Event and Fundraiser. Maine’s own Twenty 2 Vodka will provide three different science-themed cocktails (one one each floor of the Maine Discovery Museum), and present a look at the science of their distillation process. Catering provided by Fork & Spoon. This is a 21+ event, with all proceeds supporting the Maine Science Festival. Tickets are $25/person in advance (available until noon on September 21st), $30/person at the door.
