June 3, 3:30 – 7:30pm: Hidden Figure Project Maine. Join Challenger Learning Center and Emera Astronomy Center staff for a fun rocket building activity! How high will your rocket fly? After, it’s time for a pizza supper break and rocket story sharing! Finally, take a seat in the Emera Astronomy Center planetarium for an exclusive viewing of the movie, “Hidden Figures,” made possible with support from River City Cinema.

Continuing on the First Responders/Emergency Management themes we began to explore at the Zombie Apocalypse, Jeff Currier of the Maine Forest Service will lead us on an interactive tour of the Jonesboro Forest Station.

Bridie McGreavy, an Assistant Professor of Environmental Communication in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Maine, will present and share insights from a four-year ethnographic research project to understand and support sustainability efforts in Maine’s clamming communities.

Mark Derr is the author of How the Dog Became the Dog: From Wolves to Our Best FriendsDog’s Best Friend and A Dog’s History of America. As an expert on the subject of dogs, he has appeared regularly on The Charlie Rose Show, and in documentaries for A&E and The Discovery Channel. He writes regularly for Atlantic Monthly, Natural History, Smithsonian and The New York Times. Free event, for all ages.

June 20, 9:00am – 12:00pm: Special Aquaculture Exhibit and Curriculum Workshop for K-5 Teachers. Hands-on workshop: come preview the new Aquaculture Exhibit, learn about just released K-5 Ocean and Seaweed Curriculum and get your hands wet in the UMaine Aquaculture Research Institute’s touch tank. Every teacher who attends will receive free books for their classroom and a $50 stipend.

Applications are now being accepted: Engineering camp (Maine Summer Transportation Institute), run from July 10-21 (9am-4pm weekdays). Full Scholarship (Free) 2 Weeks Summer Camp in Engineering funded by Federal Highway Administration for Greater Bangor Area Middle School students. UMaine College of Engineering is offering educational opportunities for 20 middle school students to learn about engineering and transportation related careers. Students are exposed to university life, leadership and team-building activities, and a series of lectures, workshops, hands-on laboratories, and field trips. Participants explore all aspects of engineering.

Applications are now being acceptedForays into the Maine Coast a unique workshop combining Marine Field Science and Art! Monday to Fridays, 2 weeks, July 24 – August 4; start and finish times are somewhat tide dependent but approximately 9 AM to 3 PM. The class will be co-taught by International Environmental Artist and explorer Mara G. Haseltine and Molecular Biologist and Sea Captain Bradford Haskell. We will be partnering with MDI Biological Laboratories and the Ocean Foundation for this workshop which is sure to be an adventure in learning not to be missed. This workshop is open to all ages and perfect for entire families to enjoy the Maine Coastline and learning together. 

$600/person; we ask that students nine under nine years old be accompanied by an adult.
