February 1, 7:00pm: The Science of Wellness: Why Your Doctor Continues to Insist You Sleep, Exercise, and Be Well. Sleep and exercise are vital parts of what allows us to function and thrive. We rely on sleep to generate growth, form new memories, and promote healing. Exercise promotes strength, muscle development, balance and makes us feel good. Without these, our productivity suffers, our immunity wanes, and our minds dull. Join Dr. Nicole Rausch as she shares how sleep and exercise achieve these things and why they are so important.
Regular public programs are available on Friday evenings at 7pm (The First Stargazers) and Sunday afternoons at 2pm (Magic Treehouse: Space Mission). More information about all programming can be found at https://astro.umaine.edu/events/.

February 15, 12:00-1:00pm. Brown Bag: Maritime Pine Communities of Acadia National Park. Two ecologically similar pine species form mid successional communities on ledge outcrops in ANP. Pitch pine dominates communities on Mount Desert Island, while jack pine dominates those on the Schoodic Peninsula. Over two decades of research suggests that their disjunct distribution is due to microclimatic differences between these locations and their ecophysiological adaptations. Join Michael Day, Associate Research Professor, Tree Physiology and Physiological Ecology, University of Maine and learn the differences of these maritime pine communities.
