December 13, 7:30 – 9:00pm
Following up from the weekend, on December 13, at 7:30pm, we are hosting a MSF Pop-up event with MSF partners River City Cinema and COESpace: Humanity Needs Dreamers: A Visit With Marie Curie. What if you could time travel to 1915 Paris and meet one of the world’s greatest scientists? Take part in a captivating evening of narrative science & living history with a screening of the short film Humanity Needs Dreamers: A Visit With Marie Curie, followed by a discussion with scientists Kristy Townsend and Heather Hamlin of the University of Maine, as well as filmmaker Jen Myronuk, and (via Skype) Susan Marie Frontczak, who portrays Marie Curie.
Marie Curie (née Maria Skłodowska) is best known for the discovery of radioactivity, including the first successful treatment for cancer, but few understand the obstacles she faced just to get into the laboratory. Experience Marie’s remarkable journey from her childhood in Poland through groundbreaking research in France, and further international prominence. Humanity Needs Dreamers: A Visit With Marie Curie explores the tenacity of the human spirit and the enduring allure of scientific discovery.
This MSF Pop-up event is available free-of-charge, with a recommended audience of middle school and up. Space is limited at COESpace (48 Columbia St, Bangor), so seating will be first-come, first-served; doors open at 7pm.
