Open November 1st: Film Contest for Maine middle school students and high school students. Middle schoolers: create a Mock Movie Trailer. High Schoolers: create a short film. November 7th deadline: If you are interested in presenting at the 5th Annual Maine Science Festival, submit your pitch via our Intent to Present page. There is a description of all the events/programming there, with specific forms available for workshops; forums & talks; hands on activities; Tech Night; and Friday Field Trip Day (interactive presentations/workshops and hands-on activities). If you have a programming idea that doesn’t fit into one of those areas, please send an email to participate@mainesciencefestival.org.

In keeping with MSF’s mission to keep the festival as accessible as possible, the tickets are $10/students and $17/public in advance, with a $5 increase at the door. Wednesdays (November 7, 14, 28 & December 5 ), 3:30 – 4:30pm: LEGO Afterschool Club. Challenger’s Afterschool LEGO club combines the excitement of LEGO creation with engineering fun, including the use of Challenger’s LEGO WeDo Engineering kits to build and program LEGO robots! Beginning November 5: UMaine Extension Follow a Researcher® expedition to Poland. Teachers, students and the public are invited to follow two graduate students from the University of Maine Climate Change Institute on their expedition to Katowice, Poland in the fifth Follow a Researcher® expedition, “From UMaine to the UN: Climate Science and Policy,” Anna McGinn and Will Kochtitzky are traveling to COP24, the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to engage with world leaders who are negotiating global climate change policies.

November 3, 12:00 – 6:00pm: Dr. Deborah Bronk, Bigelow Laboratory’s new president and CEO, is speaking at the latest TEDxDirigo event. November 6, 10:00-11:00am: Magic Treehouse: Space Mission. Travel with the brother-sister duo, Jack and Annie, in their Magic Treehouse, as they discover a note that asks them to answer a series of questions about space. Family Audiences

November 15, 7:00pm: Science Lecture Series, Vaccines: Heroes or Villains (hint: it’s the first one). Take a look at the science of immunization, exploring the basic biology of the human immune system and why it is important in society. What recommendations do medical experts have? What are the controversies, myths, and rumors? Learn the latest on vaccines with special attention on the influenza vaccine and upcoming predictions for “flu season” here in Maine. Dr. James W. Jarvis, MD, FAAFP, senior vice president and senior physician executive from Eastern Maine Medical/Northern Light, is the speaker.

Fridays (November 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30) 7:00pm: Solar Superstorms. Travel into the tangle of magnetic fields and superhot plasma that vent the Sun’s rage in dramatic flares, violent solar tornadoes, and the largest eruptions in the solar system: Coronal Mass Ejections. Explore how the Sun influences our lives on Earth in numerous ways in the modern age. The program is narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch of Star Trek and Dr. Strange fame. $6 for Adults, $5 for UMaine Students/Senior Citizens, $4 for children 12 and under.

Sundays November 4, 11, 18 & 25), 2:00pm: Fly Me to the Moon introduces new generations to space exploration and the historic moment when the world was united for this awe-inspiring achievement. A family film, the story is voiced by talents, Kelly Ripa, Christopher Lloyd, Nicollette Sheridan, Tim Curry and a live action/animation cameo by real-life Apollo 11 astronaut, Buzz Aldrin. Fly Me to the Moon takes viewers to a place they have never been before. The program includes a tour of the night sky.

November 5, 3:00-4:00pm: Conservation: No Longer Just for Do-Gooders Dr. Spencer Meyer is a senior conservationist at Highstead, and he will share his passion for the new Sebago Clean Waters initiative, which is bringing local, regional and national stakeholders together to create new investments in clean drinking water, healthy forests, and community conservation in the Sebago region of Maine.

November 26, 3:00-4:00pm: Crossing boundaries to better understand forest sustainability Erin Simons-Legaard is currently Research Assistant Professor of Forest Landscape Modeling in the School of Forest Resources. Erin will discuss her work using geospatial data, filling an identified knowledge gap about forest conditions under the current system of regulations and certification, and through engagement with key stakeholders responsible for ensuring forest sustainability in Maine.

November 2, 8:00am – 3:00pm: Convergence 2018: The Economic & Biodiversity Values of Conservation in Downeast Maine. A day to share two new tools developed by DCN and partners – “The Value of Conserved Lands in Downeast Maine” economic study and the Biodiversity Resiliency Mapping Program. Presenters, panelists, and attendees will discuss the development, responses to, and potential for these tools, and there will be time to work with the economic study and mapping program directly. Registration ends November 1st; $50.
