Kristy Townsend is an Assistant Professor of Neurobiology in the School of Biology and Ecology (SBE) at the University of Maine, cooperating faculty in the School of Food and Agriculture (SFA) and Department of Molecular and Biomedical Science (MBMS), and a faculty member in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Engineering (GSBSE). Kristy is a graduate of the University of Maine, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, and she earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Boston University. Kristy has also worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow, at King’s College London (St. Thomas and Guy’s Hospitals), and at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School.
Kristy studies how the brain coordinates energy balance and how the central and peripheral nervous systems undergo plasticity. This research impacts the study of obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, aging, and neurodegenerative diseases. She was the “Mystery Scientist” for the 2017 Maine Science Festival headliner event, You’re the Expert.
